Ski Resort Reviews France

Alpe d'Huez

(23 Apr 2004): Arrived on 10th April 2004. Snow was fantastic for that time of year. Plenty of runs and no long queues for the lifts. There is an English ski school called Masterclass which meets at le lac blanc restaurant every morning. It is not much dearer than the ESF but the lessons are much better. Masterclass specialises in intermediates and the class sizes never exceed 8 people. Through them, my sons came down a black run at the end of their first week on snow. Definitely recommend them.

Châtel

(18 Jan 2005): I have skied Chatel since my childhood and seen the development of some fantastic inter-valleys cooperation. Unbelievable amount of ski acreage, one pass allows you to ski in 5 different resorts, hundreds of miles of skiing interspersed with lovely chalets, towns, slopeside cafes and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Here in Washington, I serve on the Mt Baker ski patrol and dream about my upcoming yearly trip to Chatel in March. Chatel, try it, you'll love it!

Tignes

(1 Mar 2004): This is by far the slickest resort i have had the chance to visit and i have now returned four times and each time it just gets better. The best way to explore the area is to buy the espace killy lift pass, this will give you the chance to fully explore the vallies in the area which include the infamous val d'isere and le fornet. However if the pass is too much the tignes local pass will still provide you with more than enough pistes to play on for a week, also the off piste opportunities are endless. Tignes itself is set above 2000m so the snow conditions are always very good. There is also a bus service that links val and tignes so if your wanting to get messy in a great venue for a night out go give dicks tea bar a once over.

Vars

(21 Dec 2004 ): Well, I went to Vars in Dec 2004, hotel looked like a giant shed, but it wasn't so bad room number 12 i bet the staff r amazed they can finally c the colour of the carpet lol, the slopes r too far from the hotel especially when u have to take your ski's there and back 4 times a day, slopes quite good, but the big downer for me was the huge metal stairs outside the hotel u have to walk up bout 6 times a day propa killed me legs by the end of the trip, go to vars and if you want risk Hotel Franou lol only messin have fun!!!! i wana go back!!!!

Risoul

(7 Mar 2002): In reality, Risoul is awful. We worked there for a week and if it was any longer we would have commited suicide! The food was awful, we had no hot water, and apartment fit for one-which in reality was shared by three including a 29 year old male who non of us knew! Fire precautions were in French in our apartment, let alone was there a smoke alarm. We are currently Travel an Tourism students and quite frankly this experience has put us off!!!

Les 2 Alpes

(3 Feb 2004): Les 2 Alpes is great when the snow elsewhere is nowhere to be seen. due to the glacier at the top of the resort it means that you can still ski in tremendous conditions. i enjoyed the views i got from the top of the resort, at 10000 feet it was the highest id ever skied. I recently took a group of school children there (all beginners), and they all want to go again, as their ski instructress was excellent. i also felt that they enjoyed the facilities that the town had to offer. there was bowling, swimming, ice skating and much more, all offered at a discount price with a valid ski pass.

Chamonix

One of the few serious contenders for the title of "world's most famous ski resort," Chamonix Mont Blanc has the world's biggest lift-served vertical drop of 2807 metres (9209 feet ) and one of the world's longest runs through the Vallée Blanche at 22 km (13.7 miles). Chamonix hosted the world's first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. Beyond these spectacular statistics is Chamonix's rarely disputed status as the world's mountain sports capital, the subject of endless (and often witless) ski magazine reports from writers wishing to prove they descended between the glacial crevasses and lived to brag about it. For lesser mortals, there are plenty of on-piste kilometres to enjoy and a lift link over to Italy's Aosta Valley, all dominated by the spectacular scenery of Mont Blanc

Saint Gervais

(10 Oct 2003): I grew up going to St Gervais every winter... it holds some of my fondest memories. The area is beautiful and yet still not too crowded. It is the best way to experience true french skiing without the frills or expense of the likes of Chamonix, or the other more well known skiing locales. The location is wonderful in that it is connected to many other ski areas and if that is not enough a short driving distance to others. I can only dream of returning...

Cauterets

(Scotland): I spent the best part of a season in Cauterets, being on exchange to the engineering school in the nearby town of Tarbes. It's by far the most fun resort in the area for snowboarding, as every run is laden with natural hits and there are several natural halfpipes (down the middle, under the 4-main chair "Le grand Barbat"). I started the season as a beginner and by the end would count myself "high intermediate" and Cauterets remained my favourite resort throughout. Snow conditions are also the best in the area, the season starting in early December. We had a metre of fresh powder on the 18th of April - a great way to end the season. Weather conditions in Cauterets are generally excellent - beaucoup de soliel.

Les Angles

Since I'm from Barcelona I skied many times at Les Angles. Great skiing as well as great facilities. The weather is usually very nice and the views from the top are magnificent. I skied in the Alps and the US, but the Pyrenees (French, Spanish and Andorran) are the best and most beautiful ski areas in the world!!
